In many cases the cottages were sold on by the offspring of villagers who themselves moved out to the churchyards. Many of the properties, quaint as holiday lets, were deemed too isolated, primitive and impractical for modern family living. The high prices help of course\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Tony Sanderson is a third generation Grasmerian. He and Mo have been married thirty-two years \u2013 part of the sixty percent that make Grasmere a living village. They, like a lot of my friends don\u2019t have kids and in many ways the bond between them is stronger as a result. They enjoy each others company and hang out and holiday together like a couple of old friends \u2013 which they are.<\/p>\n<p>It was that fact that so many professional people are choosing not to have children that got me thinking about the future of the human race \u2013 as you do. So I began to look at the statistics beginning with what was a generally misconceived belief that there are more people alive than have ever died.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t get an accurate census until AD 1800 when the population stood at around one billion. Using this as a guide the Washington Institute for Population Studies, beginning with the emergence of homo sapiens 50,000 years ago and a population of two and including the current population of seven billion, estimates that 107 billion have died: meaning each one of us carries fifteen ghosts behind us.<\/p>\n<p>The current rate of twenty-three births per thousand population differs greatly from the eighty births per thousand in ancient times. The current rate wouldn\u2019t have sustained the species when life expectancy was much lower.<\/p>\n<p>I then began to look at extinction rates. Only 0.1% of species that have ever lived are still alive. 99.9% are extinct. A successful species can expect to survive up to ten million years; though that is the exception.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t look too good for us, but then you have to put things in perspective. We\u2019ve only been around 50,000 years: two thousand years ago Caesar was hanging out with Cleopatra and ten million years is a long time.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose what I\u2019m really saying is, that it\u2019s all going to end sometime so whatever lifestyle you choose, make the most of it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ancestors<\/p>\n<p>By Neil Rollinson<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>We all without a single exception inherit<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>all our genes from an unbroken line<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>of successful ancestors<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Richard Dawkins<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When I reach for you in the hot night<\/p>\n<p>I wonder, do I really want you,<\/p>\n<p>or are my genes on fire for some distant shore?<\/p>\n<p>As we fuck in the night, I can hear them singing,<\/p>\n<p>choir to choir in the endless dark.<\/p>\n<p>I think of our ancestors, the distance<\/p>\n<p>they travelled \u2013 out of the slime<\/p>\n<p>and into the trees, through the ice ages<\/p>\n<p>and the shifting of continents.<\/p>\n<p>They came through plagues that wasted millions,<\/p>\n<p>hunger, poverty, war. Not one of them<\/p>\n<p>failed to find a mate. They slipped through aeons<\/p>\n<p>passing their code from body to body,<\/p>\n<p>to me and you in the distant future,<\/p>\n<p>a childless couple drinking beer,<\/p>\n<p>talking politics and science. To think<\/p>\n<p>it all ends here for these particular passengers,<\/p>\n<p>to have come this far and found a blank. If I were<\/p>\n<p>the sentimental type<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d take you now in the alley behind the bar,<\/p>\n<p>and do the honourable thing.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d open the floodgates and let them go,<\/p>\n<p>screaming and singing into the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tony and Mo\u2019s recipe for Peasant soup<\/p>\n<p>1 oz butter<br \/>\n1 lb stewing steak, cut into \u00bein. &#8211; 1in. cubes<br \/>\n1 medium onion, roughly chopped<br \/>\nBouquet garni<br \/>\n1 garlic clove, crushed<br \/>\n1 teasp. paprika<br \/>\nSalt &amp; pepper to taste<br \/>\n2 tablesp. plain flour<br \/>\n2 pts good beef stock<br \/>\n1 large potato<br \/>\nCaraway seeds &amp; grated parmesan to garnish<\/p>\n<p>Melt butter until foam subsides and fry the cubes of beef until well<br \/>\nbrowned.<\/p>\n<p>Add the onions, reduce the heat and cook until soft and transparent.<\/p>\n<p>Add the bouquet garni, garlic, paprika salt and pepper and stir well.<\/p>\n<p>Mix in the flour, reduce the heat and cook stirring for 5 mins.<\/p>\n<p>Gradually stir in the stock bringing to the boil, cover the pan and simmer<br \/>\nfor 2 hrs.<\/p>\n<p>Add the diced potato, cover the pan and simmer a further 45mins.<\/p>\n<p>Remove the bouquet garni and ladle, piping hot, into warmed soup bowls.<br \/>\nScatter with caraway seeds and grated parmesan if desired but definitely<br \/>\nrecommended!<\/p>\n<p>ps.
